Structural Bodywork:
Structural Alignment through Myofascial Technique
& Movement Re-Education

Structural Bodywork is a process of re-education of the body through movement and touch utilizing the body’s fascial system.  Connective tissue or fascia is the support system of the body. A healthy and balanced connective tissue system’s characteristics are flexibility, elasticity, length and resilience which allow for optimal alignment within the field of gravity.

In this Advanced Bodywork Certification program, a series of workshops will be offered in order to develop skills in working with the myofascial system as a means of restoring harmony and balance to the connective tissue matrix. The results of this approach include improved posture, reduced muscle and joint pain, greater ease and freedom of movement, enhanced body awareness, and the learning of movement forms to maintain and further the effects.

Each 3 day workshop will have a central theme and a focus but will include integration into the entire body structure. Assessment, movement, palpation, layering, body usage, and fascial anatomy will be continuous themes within every workshop.

  • Postural Assessment
  • Fascial and 3-dimensional Functional Anatomy
  • Myofascial Techniques
  • Movement Education for Therapist & Client
  • Session design and Client management

Introduction to Structural Bodywork ~ June 12 & 13, 2010 ~ download flyer

The Back and Pelvis: Sat. June 12 ~ 11am-6pm

This workshop will focus on the core segments of the back and pelvis, presenting an integrated strategy for alignment through myofascial techniques and movement. We will present the principles of our Structural Bodywork approach including working with fascia, assessment, gravity and alignment, proper body usage and techniques, somatic re-patterning and movement approaches. We will also teach key hands-on techniques to help free the pelvis and lower back, creating more mobility and enhancing alignment of the core, lumbopelvic segments.

Myofascial Side-Lying Techniques: Sun. June 13 ~ 9am-5pm

This workshop will address the “lateral line” of the torso, looking at the relationship between and alignment of the pelvis, back, thorax, shoulder, and neck. We will present specific myofascial techniques for these segments including three dimensional fascial approaches for the rib cage, the core, and girdles.  These techniques will be presented within the context of overall alignment integrated with movement education and awareness techniques to assist the client with both structural and functional integration.

Postural Assessment: The Art of Seeing Body Patterns, Fri. & Sat. August 13 & 14, 2010 ~ 9am-5pm ~ download flyer

The 200-hour program consists of 3-day segments running once per month and may be taken individually or in it’s entirety as an Advanced Certification.

Foundations of Structural Bodywork: The Core ~ download flyer
 September 24, 25 & 26, 2010 ~ 9am-5pm ~ Date Change

In this first workshop we will begin to develop an understanding of the fascial system and its 3-dimensional matrix. Often referred to as the “organ of form”, fascia literally holds our body together and gives it shape. We will learn to assess postural patterns and feel for fascial restrictions and adhesions where fascia is binding to an adjacent structure inhibiting muscle function.

Through the proper use of our hands we will begin to feel how heat and pressure applied in the right way and at the right depth will create positive change and lengthen tissue allowing it to become reorganized. We will also experience how fascia can change through movement as it becomes rehydrated and lengthened. The emphasis will be on the “Core” segments of the body creating balance and support to the structures closest to and around the center of gravity, including the lumbo-pelvic segments.

We will learn how to recognize what areas need to be released through fascial manipulation and what needs to become more toned in order to create postural balance. Students will become more adept at teaching their clients movement and core strengthening to effect a more lasting change in which their clients are involved in the process. With movement education, clients learn how to use their bodies more efficiently and how to optimize use of the structural changes that have been made.  This workshop will be highly experiential as well as including lecture and slide presentations. Each participant will experience receiving structural bodywork and movement sequences which integrate the hands on work.

Grounding: The Legs and Feet as Foundations ~ download flyer
November 5, 6 & 7, 2010 ~ 9am - 5pm
~ Date Change

In this workshop we will learn how aligning the feet, ankles and legs will provide crucial support for the pelvis and spine. Any twists or rotations in the legs will manifest above as imbalances in the pelvis. Through movement and hands on work we will help to align the feet and legs so they offer support and balance to the rest of the body.

Ribs and Spine: Optimizing Respiration and Alignment ~ download flyer
December 3, 4 & 5, 2010 ~ 9am - 5pm ~ Date Change

The relationship between the rib cage and the pelvis is vital for optimizing breathing and general body balance. The ribs are an area of unconscious holding and tension which creates excess pressure around the diaphragm and heart. Freeing the ribs not only increases the vital capacity of the breath but allows the torso to support the movement of the shoulders and arms. Through fascial manipulation and movement we will free the ribs from their habitual tension patterns as well as reduce vertebral stress and enhance spinal alignment.

Pelvis: The Basin of Support
Dates TBA

Often times an area of great structural confusion the pelvis is the distribution area of the
weight of the upper body through to the legs. In this workshop we will explore rotations, twists, torques, and asymmetries of the pelvic girdle. Through myofascial restructuring and movement we will help the pelvis to find it’s optimal balance which also creates a sound base of support for a healthy and aligned spine.

Shoulders and Arms: Reaching Out
Dates TBA

This workshop will explore the structural and functional balance of the shoulder girdle and its relationship with the arm. We will learn to asses muscular imbalances which translate into faulty biomechanics of the arm and shoulder and how through movement, strengthening exercises and myofascial bodywork we can have positive influence on the functional integrity of the shoulder and arm.

Neck, Head, Face and Jaw
Dates TBA

The neck is the bridge between the head and the shoulders. Its structural integrity depends on the balance between the neck flexors and extensors. We will learn how to release the deeper tissues of the anterior neck and it’s fascial relationships into the face and jaw. Movements and detailed neck work will help to create the balanced framework for the head and neck.

Integration: Integrating the Parts into the Whole
Dates TBA

The primary goal of this workshop is to bring together the learning from the previous weekends into creating sessions based on your seeing, assessment, using your hands and arms as tools, movement and client education. In this way you will use your knowledge to see how you can assist your client in creating structural and functional changes and integration.
